My name is Daryl. I am the proud Dad of two wonderful children. They have been the best gift given to me to share in this lifetime. I grew up on a farm in Manitoba with three siblings; I enjoyed the freedom and quiet life. My wonderful parents taught me a strong work ethic tempered with care for others.
I have CKD. I am on dialysis. My story is no different than the millions suffering from Chronic Kidney Disease.
In December of 2022, I found out that I had a medical issue. After a visit to the ER and more tests, I was informed that I had Chronic Kidney Disease, and by April of 2022, I was on dialysis.
My two children and other blood relatives have tested and can’t donate as they might be at risk for CKD. My only hope now is to find a living kidney donor so that I can end dialysis and get back to living an entire active life.
Dialysis has drawbacks, and for that reason, I am searching for a living donor. Finding a deceased donor can take up to 6 years. It’s challenging to ask, but I am asking someone to “Share their Spare” so that I can find a living donor soon and continue to advocate for others in their search for a kidney donor. It is very important to me to give back and help others.
Kidney donation is a selfless act that can save lives and improve the health of those in need. A kidney transplant is a surgical procedure that replaces a damaged or non-functional kidney with a healthy one.

Living kidney donation is becoming more common, as it has been found to be safe and effective. The donor can live a healthy life with one functioning kidney, while the recipient can enjoy a better quality of life with a fully functioning kidney.
The wait for a deceased donor could be 8 years and that is not ideal for someone who is already on dialysis. Dialysis is physically and emotionally debilitating and takes a lot of time.
Quality of life suffers significantly for people on dialysis, and survival rates decrease as the years go on.
To truly achieve the quality of life I hope to live, a kidney transplant is my best and only hope.

A transplant will give me a second chance. It will allow me to continue my life’s mission, to continue to advocate for those individuals searching for a kidney who cannot advocate for themselves.
A kidney transplant will allow me to create more memories with family and friends. Most of all, a transplant will let me watch my children achieve their milestones and become the people I have been raising them to be.

There are two types of living donation. Directed donation and non-directed anonymous donation (gifting a kidney completely anonymously or altruistically).
Direct donation requires an established relationship, which means anonymous donors for specific recipients are not accepted into Transplant Manitoba’s program. If someone connects with the program wanting to donate to someone they do not know, the person may choose to step forward as an anonymous donor ensuring fairness and equity to all those waiting for a transplant. Anonymous living kidney donors are also given the opportunity to participate in the Kidney Paired Donation program through Canadian Blood Services where they may trigger a chain of kidney transplants..
